EMEI

One of China's Four
Sacred Buddhist Mountains

Emei Mountain (峨眉山) has been a place of Buddhist pilgrimage since the Eastern Han Dynasty — more than 1,500 years of continuous spiritual practice on a single forested mountain. It is the bodhimanda (place of enlightenment) of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, and hundreds of thousands of pilgrims ascend it each year.

At the summit, the Golden Summit Shrine (金顶) rises above the clouds at 3,077 metres. When the weather cooperates, you witness the famous "Buddha's Halo" — a circular rainbow appearing in the mist below, with your own shadow at its centre. Many visitors describe it as one of the most extraordinary visual experiences of their lives.

"I have climbed mountains on four continents. Emei is the only one where I felt the mountain was climbing me — testing something deeper than my legs." — Inner China guest, Germany

Six Experiences You Cannot
Find Anywhere Else

01

The Golden Summit at Sunrise

Stay overnight at a summit monastery and be there at dawn. The sun rises over a sea of cloud, the golden halls catch the first light, and the mountain fills with chanting. This is worth the entire journey.

ICONIC
02

Buddha's Halo (佛光)

A meteorological phenomenon unique to Emei: a glowing circular rainbow appears in the mist below the summit, with your shadow at its centre, surrounded by the halo. Pilgrims consider it a blessing. Scientists marvel at the optics.

WONDER
03

Baoguo Monastery — Living Sangha

At the mountain's base, Baoguo Monastery (报国寺) is home to a full community of monks. Arrive early for morning chanting at 5:30 AM — the drums and bells echoing in the mountain air will stay with you.

AUTHENTIC
04

Ancient Forest Trails

Emei's lower slopes are covered in old-growth subtropical forest — towering camphor trees, ancient ferns, and the rushing Emei River. Walking these paths is a meditative experience before you even reach a temple.

NATURE
05

The Wild Tibetan Macaques

Emei's famously bold wild monkeys have co-existed with pilgrims for generations. They are not always gentle — but an encounter with a troupe of macaques on a forest path is one of the most alive moments on the mountain.

WILDLIFE
06

Overnight at a Summit Monastery

Inner China can arrange overnight stays in working monasteries on the upper mountain — simple rooms, monk's schedule, early morning silence. A completely different experience from a hotel.

IMMERSIVE

The Monasteries of
Mount Emei

From the base to the summit, Emei's monasteries form a living vertical journey through 1,500 years of Chinese Buddhism.

Elevation 550m · 基山

Baoguo Monastery

报国寺

The mountain's main gateway monastery, founded in the 17th century. A full monastic community resides here. Morning chanting at 5:30 AM is open to respectful visitors. The architecture is Ming Dynasty-style, with magnificent carved beams and extensive gardens.

Elevation 800m · 中山

Qingyin Pavilion

清音阁

Built at the confluence of two mountain streams, this ancient pavilion has a soundscape unlike any other — rushing water on both sides, birdsong overhead, and bell chimes drifting from within. One of the most peaceful places on the mountain.

Elevation 2,070m · 上山

Xixiang Pool Monastery

洗象池

Named for the legend that Samantabhadra's sacred elephant bathed here. At this elevation, cloud and forest create a dramatically different atmosphere. The resident monks here are serious practitioners with little interest in performance.

Elevation 3,077m · 金顶

Golden Summit Shrine

金顶

The pinnacle of the pilgrimage. A 48-metre golden statue of Samantabhadra dominates the summit platform. On clear days, a 360-degree view of the Sichuan Basin and distant Himalayan peaks. In cloud, an otherworldly atmosphere of bells, incense, and mist.
